I agree with ya. I feel ya. I was a women’s studies minor in college too and I always felt like I didn’t belong to the “hardcore” group of feminist girls because I disagreed with them on some things, which was weird because weren’t we all for the female voice? We spent way too much time talking about personal issues and ways we use words then actually doing something. Feminism is cool, but stop talking so much and getting pissed at the world and do something about it ya know? I thought it was cool you posted this, brave thing cuz you could of had some serious backlash.

Yes–great point, and I think those qualifiers exist (in feminism) because there are so many sub-groups that are in some cases resentful and critical of other similarly posed groups, so there’s this constant need to root out those who are fer it or agin’ it.

Great post! I’ve just started avoiding loaded terms like “sex-positive”, “bisexual”, and “feminist” because they’re a pain in the ass to use. You always have to qualify it, like “I’m a feminist, but I use the words douche, cunt, and bitch.” We have a lot of big “human issues” to deal with, but a lot of activist groups seem to get focused on minutiae (like the use of the word douche), which, while not totally insignificant, makes the group seem douche-y.

I call myself a feminist just because its an easy identifier but I’ve started to throw it around less and less because people assume I am gay, hate sex, makeup/dresses. And some feminists can’t believe I would love to get married and stay at home with kids. I can’t win either way…

It is absolutely a human issue. If more people had the same set of beliefs, I suppose there wouldn’t be a need to identify yourself one way or another.
